KALAMAZOO, Mich. — An active shooter situation was resolved with the suspect’s death Saturday morning.
According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, at 9:15 a.m. Saturday officers responded to a report of gunshots fired at the Kalamazoo Transit Center, located at 459 N. Burdick St. in downtown Kalamazoo. Upon arriving at the scene, officers encountered an active shooter situation with multiple victims sustaining non-life-threatening wounds.
Officers shot the suspect, provided him with immediate medical assistance and transported the shooter to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The suspect was later identified as 54-year-old Anthony Oliver.
Police chief Vernon Coakley told FOX 17 that Oliver boarded a bus and started shooting. He said bullets struck three people, all with non-life-threatening wounds.
KDPS public information officer Ryan Bridges told FOX 19 that the situation was resolved and that there was no threat to the community.
Burdick Street was closed to traffic between Ransom Street and North Rose Street.
Kalamazoo’s Metro bus service was suspended for the day as of 11:15 a.m. Saturday. Greyhound and Indian Trails buses bypassed Kalamazoo on Saturday, while Amtrak trains also bypassed Kalamazoo and passengers were making connections at the next location.
Kalamazoo Public Safety has turned the case over to the Michigan State Police Fifth District investigation team, which is based in Paw Paw.
