Deadly officer-involved shooting in Alexander County

TAYLORSVILLE, N.C.  – A person was shot and killed by a deputy after fleeing arrest and fighting with law enforcement on Sunday night in Alexander County.

The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office said deputies attempted to arrest a person with five warrants out for their arrest at a home on Dusty Road just before 10 p.m.

Once at the home, deputies began giving the person verbal commands. The sheriff’s office said the person ran from the home and after a deputy caught up to the person, a fight ensued.

During the fight, the person shot at the deputy before the deputy returned fire, killing the person.

Officials have not yet released the person’s name, nor what the warrants were for.

The NC State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is investigating the shooting and the deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave.
