KANSAS CITY, Mo. – KCPD responded to a fatal shooting in Westport that sent six people to the hospital, one of whom died.
The shooting happened around 1:20 a.m. at the intersection of Westport Road and Broadway Boulevard.
Officers working in the Westport Entertainment District heard multiple gunshots and moved toward the sound. As they approached the east side of the intersection, they found several shooting victims.
Emergency medical crews were called to the scene and they began treating several of the victims. KCPD reported that most of the victims suffered from what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. One man, however, was unresponsive at the scene and was later declared dead at the hospital.
In total, KCPD said six victims were taken to area hospitals either by EMS services or privately, including the man who died.
A preliminary investigation has led KCPD to believe the shooting was the result of a disturbance that escalated into gunfire.
There was a large crowd near the scene of the shooting that dispersed when shots were fired, therefore KCPD believes there are many witnesses. While detectives and crime scene investigators process the scene for evidence, they are also looking to speak with anyone who was in the area at the time of the shooting.
If anyone heard or saw anything or has any information, they are asked to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
